“Charm - TV” Device
“Charm-TV” is a hardware/ software complex for video playback. The system was meant for installment in beauty salons, hair design salons and other public places. The user has an opportunity to both watch the set sequence of recorded video data and choose programs to his liking with the help of the remote control unit. The system provides the viewed video record statistics and the audience survey.

PROBLEM:
The point of the project was to building hardware/ software complex for video playback. The system was meant for installment in beauty salons, hair design salons and other public places.
The main system functionality is to playback the set sequence of the video records, to control the playback using a remote control unit.
The system was also supposed to provide viewed video record statistics and the audience survey.

General product description:
The system is based on open source products, the products requiring no license. The interface (menu, type fonts, screensaver, etc.) is simply modified by the staff. The system provides video data updating at the installation place. During its work the system gathers video data usage statistics. The staff responsible for the system maintenance has an opportunity of taking the gathered statistics for its further processing and analyzing.
VIA EPIA-ML8000 motherboard, VIA C3 800A processor was used as a device hardware platform. The used memory capacity was 128 Mb; HDD was 80-120 GB. This platform choice was determined by strict requirements to the system size. The system productivity is enough for MPGE-4 video record playback. To control the system an IR remote control unit is used. Tekram-201 module is serial-port attached and is used as a IR receiver.
