Avactis Shopping Cart – Shipping Modules

As a matter of customer and administrator convenience, the online store has to enable customers to choose a suitable shipping method, calculate time and shipping cost, and initiate shipping process. The project goal was to integrate the Avactis e-commerce shopping cart software with all well-known postal service systems: UPS, USPS, FedEx, Australia Post, Canada Post, Freight 101, Intershipper.

PROBLEM:

There appeared a necessity to calculate order shipping cost for a certain address online. All known postal service systems were to be used. Every system was represented by a set of shipping methods. Online store administrator had to be able to activate any of the available postal service systems and to select shipping methods available for customers within these systems.

SOLUTION:

All major postal service companies have Internet servers accepting special format requests. The servers accept data on package weight, order total, shipping destination address and other information. In the response, they send information on possible shipping methods, timing and cost. Shipping modules provide the interaction between Avactis online shopping cart and postal service systems.

General description:
Shipping modules integrate Avactis e-commerce shopping cart software with well-known postal service systems: UPS, USPS, FedEx, Australia Post, Canada Post, Freight 101, Intershipper. To accomplish this task, modules supporting the APIs of the postal services systems mentioned above have been developed.

Integration of the developed modules into Avactis allowed achieving the following goals:

  • the ability for a customer to choose among available shipping methods and postal service systems during checkout;
  • online calculation of order shipping cost and time of delivery;
  • the possibility for a store owner to add and remove available postal service systems;
  • the possibility for a store owner to configure shipping methods available for a customer;
  • and so on.
